What's the last thing you want to do after you get home from school? Homework! Many kids aren't interested in homework, and you may hear yourself complaining, "It's so boring", or "Do I have to?"
The fact is, researchers say that how you complete homework assignments has a direct bearing on your academic success. Homework also lets teachers check the effectiveness of their lessons and figure out who needs additional help. A combination of homework assignments helps you retain newly learned skills and information, and lets teachers cover more information. Ideally, teachers assign three types of homework:
- Practice Homework, which reinforces newly learned skills,
- Preparation Homework, in anticipation of classroom activities, and
- Extension Assignments, such as research papers and science-fair projects which ask you to apply information you've learned along with your own research and problem-solving skills.
What types of homework do you have on your "to do" list today?
When you manage your own homework, you increase your independence, responsibility, and self-esteem.
