Build on what your child is learning at school
Schools have clear standards for the knowledge and skills children are expected learn at each grade level and in each class.
Early in the year or at fall conferences, ask the teacher questions, such as:
Elementary
- "How do you teach reading and handwriting?"
- "What will the class be studying in social studies this year?"
- "What topics will be covered in math?"
- "What are your expectations for writing assignments?"
- "How do homework assignments get communicated? Are there any patterns? Daily expectations?"
Secondary
- "What topics will be covered in this class?"
- "How are grades determined?"
- "What kinds of work will be sent home? Are there patterns? Daily expectations?"
And then build on and reinforce these efforts at home!
