Work with other parents

Consider choosing one of these or other activities:

  • Early in the year or at fall conferences, ask your children's teachers what kinds of help they could use in the classroom.  If your child is in early elementary and you can't get to the school during the day, ask if the teacher has any "piece work" that can be sent home.  This could be coloring and cutting shapes for a calendar, bookmaking, or other small projects you and your child could do together at home.

  • Let elective staff (music, art, science, physical education, media specialists) know you're willing to help them too!

  • Check the school calendar.  Every school events needs people to pull it off.  Find out who's organizing the event and pitch in!

  • Attend parent group and site council meetings.  These are attended by the principal and are a great place to learn about the challenges, hopes and dreams of the school.

  • Serve as a chaperone on field trips, help the school raise money, or volunteer to assist with other student activities.

  • Set a personal goal and try to stick to it.  Whether you can afford one day a week or four hours a month, there's plenty of work that needs to be done.  It's just a matter of finding the right fit.
