There has been an explosion of research and community action around School Readiness since the Parsing study was undertaken.  The information provided here is based on the 2005 report from the Minnesota Department of Education, Early Childhood Indicators of Progress: Minnesota's Early Learning Standards.

WAYS TO MEASURE

The Minnesota Early Indicators of Progress are divided into six domains:

  • Social and Emotional Development
  • Approaches to Learning
  • Language and Literacy Development
  • Creativity and the Arts
  • Cognitive Development
  • Physical and Motor Development

The indicators are based on widely held developmental expectations observed in children at age four.  "It is expected that most children will meet the majority of these expectations by the end of the pre-kindergarten year." (page 2)

  • Accountability
Children's development must be considered within the context of the family, early childhood education and care, and the community.  These systems, along with policymakers, share a role in being accountable for the optimal development of young children. (Indicators of Progress, page 3)
