May 2006 - Minnesota Students Score Near Top in National Science Report Card - The NAEP Report Card compares Minnesota’s average science scale score with those of the 44 states and one jurisdiction that participated in NAEP. According to the Report Card, Minnesota’s eighth-grade average score ranked higher than 29 jurisdictions, not significantly different than 10 jurisdictions, and lower than 5 jurisdictions. Minnesota’s fourth-grade average score ranked higher than 25 jurisdictions, not significantly different than 12 jurisdictions, and lower than 7 jurisdictions, Minnesota Department of Education.

  • 2nd in Fourth grade mathematics proficiency: 2003 (New Hampshire, 1 point)
  • 7th in Fourth grade science performance: 2000 (Massachusetts, 4 points)
  • 8th in Fourth grade science proficiency: 2000 (Massachusetts, 8 points)

  • 1st in Eighth grade mathematics performance: 2003 (Minnesota, 4 points)
  • 1st in Eighth grade mathematics proficiency: 2003 (Minnesota, 6 points)
  • 3rd in Eighth grade science performance: 2000 (Montana, 5 Points)
  • 2nd in Eighth grade science proficiency: 2000 (Montana, 3 Points)

The results suggests we should look to the following states for Best Practices in:
Math: New Hampshire, Minnesota, Massachusetts
Science: Montana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Massachusetts (and Vermont, Maine, Iowa, and Connecticut)

December 2004 - Achieving State and National Literacy Goals, a Long Uphill Road, Study finds little correlation between state reading assessments and the NAEP.  75% of students pass the Minnesota 4th grade reading assessment, but only 37% demonstrate proficiency or above proficiency on the NAEP, A Report to Carnegie Corporation of New York prepared by Rand Corporation.
