Teach your child values

Each family has its own personal, religious and cultural values, and traditions. But there are also basic values that bind all of us together—being honest, showing respect for ourselves and for others, and having compassion.

Look for ways to instill these and other values in your children. Remind your child of the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Nursery rhymes, fairy tales and folk tales provide good starting points to ask, "Was that nice?" or to talk about how the actions of one character affect another.

When reading books or watching TV with your child, look for opportunities to discuss the importance of values.
