Read with your children daily!  Try to spend at least 10 - 20 minutes each night reading to your children.

You needn't limit yourself to the words in the book, use the pictures:

  • Ask "What's that?"  Have your child point to things and tell you what they are.  Ask about colors and shapes.
  • Make up your own stories about the pictures together.

Keep plenty of books, magazines and newspapers at home. You needn't buy a lot of books - check them out from the school or local library. One of the best ways to encourage reading is to let your children see you reading.

As they get older, ask your children about what they're reading. Discussing stories with your children helps teach them to express themselves and makes reading more fun.

If you have difficulty reading, be a storyteller. Telling stories to your children develops their curiosity and language skills.
