View poor grades as an opportunity

All parents want their children to receive good marks and advance to the next grade, but don't expect teachers to give your children a grade or honor they haven't earned.

If your child receives an unsatisfactory grade, use this as an opportunity to restate your own commitment to high standards. Talk with your child (and the teacher) about what your child will need to do differently to improve the grade and/or advance to the next grade level.

There's a stronger connection between having a good work ethic (the personal commitment to doing the work) and high marks than "intelligence" per se.  Use parent-child talks about grades to share your values around work.
